Pencils and Rulers

It’s back to school time and that means new school supplies! We already have at least 100 pencils around the house, many of them never sharpened, but as we go to buy our notebooks, paper, erasers and pens, we always make it home with new pencils. This year, with my trusty 50% off coupon from Michael’s, I decided to treat myself to a brand new, Prismacolor Professional Quality Soft Thick Lead Pencil Set, with 120 colors. I didn’t forget the colorless blender! What a wonderful set! It was like getting the new big box of crayons! I feel like I won a wonderful prize! So in honor of my new 120 pencils set, I made the Pencils and Rulers lettering.

As always, when beginning a lettering font by hand, use a soft lead pencil. Determine the height that you want your letters to be, and measure and mark your boundaries with pencil.

Next, pencil in the letters, leaving space between to develop the letters.

Now, let the letters take the basic shape, include detail and go over with black pen. Erase all your pencil marks.

The final step is to color in the shapes. If you want to give it some shading, start with a lighter color and fill in the whole area desired. With a slightly darker color, pencil in the inside edge around the area. Finally, use the darkest of the colors and pencil in just a little, tiny space on the inside edge. Use your colorless blender to smooth the colors together. You can make a totally different color by blending several colors together.

You can use this lettering for Back to School, construction site, art projects and coloring fun! Have fun!
