From one sheet of cardstock, cut a piece that is 11½ x 7 and measure along the top and bottom edges marking at 5, 5Ύ, and 10Ύ, then score between the top and bottom at the marks. This will be the book cover.
From the remaining section of cardstock, cut a flap and a 1Όx7 rectangle. The template above is provided to help you make the flap.
Score the flap Ύ from the bottom edge. Score the rectangle along both long sides, measuring in Ό from the edges. This will be the spine cover.
Glue the flap to the inside of the Ύ end section of the book cover.
From the second piece of cardstock, cut an 11 ½x 7 section, a flap (without the lower Ύ section) and a 1Ύ x 5 rectangle. This rectangle will be the pencil pocket. Glue the large piece and the flap to the inside of the book cover to provide a lining and strength. You can conceal any white spaces with a marker.
Score the pencil pocket rectangle along both long edges and one short edge measuring in Ό and ½ from the edges then, remove the lower corners. Fold up the edges and glue the bottom over sides to form a box. Glue into Ύ section of book cover near flap.
Measuring from the top of the book cover spine to the bottom, mark a horizontal line at 1, 2½, 4½ and 6. Use a small hole punch to place 3 holes on each of these lines.
Cut each of the15 sheets of paper to 9Ό x 7. Divide them into 3 sets of 5 sheets and fold each set in half and crease well. You then measure along the inside of the fold from the top to the bottom, marking at 1, 2½, 4½ and 6 and use the small hole punch to place a hole at each of these marks. Repeat these steps for all three sets of folded paper.
Use dental floss (or a similar fiber) to sew a set of pages into the first set of holes on the spine. On the outside, pull the floss tight and secure with knots. Repeat for the second two sets of pages.
Glue the spine cover over stitching. Attach self-stick hook and loop dots to inside of flap and cover. An optional inside pocket can be cut from scrap cardstock and glued inside the front cover.
The final step is to decorate your journal with stickers. And so, by plane, train, or automobile, you are now set to go on a summer adventure!
