“Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children.” Like Alex Haley’s quote, many of us have such fond thoughts of grandparents. Grandparents Day is just around the corner. It’s the one day dedicated to celebrating all our grandparents mean to us.

GRANDFATHER MEMORY BOX
By Chia Wald

My Grandfather Memory Box is a lot like a matchbook shrine. I made it to celebrate the memory of my grandpa, Archie. Although he was a farmer when I knew him I always thought of him as a cowboy. The inside bears his favorite saying, "When The One Great Scorer comes, to write about thy name. He won't write what you won or lost, but how you played the game". On the outside is Grandpa's favorite photo; that's his favorite horse that was trained to lie on his side and allow grandpa to hide behind him while firing a pistol. How's that for a Wild West memory! The only thing missing from this box is a nod to the Zane Grey cowboy novels that Grandpa loved so much.

Supplies:
• Cardstock
• Rubber Stamps
• Ink pads - Versafine Vintage Sepia (Tsukineko), Butterscotch Adirondack (Ranger)
• Rubber Stamps – Horse (Jim Stephan), Sunbursts (Copper Leaf Creations)
• Designer Dries Clear Glue (Art Institute)
• Monogram Sticker (Sandylion)
• Hole punch
• Ruler
• Decorative scissors
• Copper Leaf Pen (Krylon)

Start with a 5 ½” x 5” piece of cardstock for the base and a 7 ¼” x 3 ½” piece for the sliding cover. Using stamps that compliment your subject randomly stamp on the base piece.

On the base piece, measure from all four sides and score lines at ½” and 1”. Remove the corners as shown in the diagram.

Fold up the sides and secure by gluing the tabs to the inside. Fold the top half of each side to the inside and glue into place.

To make the sliding cover, measure from one end and score a line at ½”, 3 ½”, 4”and 7”. NOTE: If your cardstock is heavy you may need to enlarge this slightly to allow the base to slide freely. Fold along the score lines and glue the ¼” end to the inside of the ½” end.

Add your grandparent’s favorite saying or other “memory” to a picture and glue it into the base. Use another photo, pre-stamped cardstock and stickers to decorate the top of the sliding cover. For my box I colored an “A” sticker and cardstock scrap with a copper leafing pen, then used a hole punch to make small copper faux brads. Slide the base into the cover like a matchbox.
