First, I found a great product called Simpletins; these are little containers with lids and a magnetic backing. I originally got them to store some of my craft supplies but decided the jewelry project would be a perfect fit. Next I had to find something metal they would stick to and that was mountable to the wall (I figured this would be a better use of space in my little bathroom) so I headed to my local hardware store. I found a cool shelf designed to hold cans of manly products for garages and workshops. I could instantly see the feminine potential.
I rushed home and ripped open my new pack of Basic Grey Periphery papers. I was dying to use them and the straight edges of the can rack gave a nice surface to showcase the designs. I measured and sliced the appropriate widths from the papers. The rack was longer than 12 inches so I cut two pieces for each of the flat areas I wanted to cover. A little of Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L’s dry adhesive along the edges and the feminine rack was starting to emerge. I added the pre-cut shape and coordinating letters that come in the Periphery pack for a focal point.
I still had more boring black surface to deal with. The area that separated the cans was a little more challenging because of the curvature and angles. I thought rub-ons would be a great solution since they are flexible and would work on both the large and skinny surfaces. I picked up some wonderful white flourishes from me and my BiG ideas. I chose these because of their light color, which contrasted with the black rack, and the flowing design.
My last step was to decorate the Simpletins with some cardstock ribbon stickers from My Mind’s Eye. I simply lined up the straight edges of the stickers to the lip on the tins. I filled the tins with my jewelry and had my husband mount the rack on the wall. I also bought some magnetic hooks and placed my most loved necklaces on those. I put some of my favorite beauty products in the can holes for easy access and my project was complete.
I was so happy with the way this turned out; the results were better than I had expected. I love when that happens, don’t you? I now have a custom designed jewelry rack that is functional and just my style.
