Jackie Wynia and her family are a close-knit group. She has two sons; her brother Doug has a son and two daughters. Along with her mother, Rose, they all enjoy sharing birthdays, holidays, and vacations - and like most families, good food and beverages are a big part of every celebration.

Recently, Jackie decided to fill a playing card size tin with favorite cocktail recipes as a gift for her sons, nieces and nephew. She included drinks with and without alcohol. To maximize the memory aspect of the cards, she decorated both sides of the cards, using photos and journaling along with the other elements.

Each recipe has a story: The Bridesmaid Cocktail is for Amber, recently her sister’s wedding attendant. The Artist Special is for the whole family, a very creative group. The photo on that card is of her Aunt Joanne and mother Rose, both painters who exhibit at local art shows. Zombie is a toast to Jackie’s son Bryan, a special effects artist. Southern Peach celebrates the South Carolina birthplace of Jackie’s nieces and the site of yearly family vacations. New York, Blizzard and White Out cocktails are in memory of the family’s many chilly Buffalo winters. Angel’s Treat has a poignant, private memory attached that family members share.

Here are some ideas to help you get started:

1. Choose a theme for the recipes - Cookies, casseroles, appetizers, cocktails.

2. Create a series of cards on your own, or invite a group of friends, family members, or co-workers to contribute their favorites. Gather together to decorate the tins and to fill them.

3. For long recipes, make small booklet-style folders or mini books, or choose a larger size tin and create bigger flat 2-sided cards.

4. Glue papers back to back, or onto actual playing cards. Die cut the cards or use a corner punch to round the corners of the cards for the look of a real deck. Option: laminate the cards for added durability.

5. Keep the embellishments flat or low-relief to maximize the number of recipe cards that will fit inside the tin. If you want to make more dimensional cards, consider framing four or six of them in a shadow box.

6. Call your recipe cards Artist Trading Cards and trade them, one at a time, with friends.

7. If time is short, decorate the tin and include an IOU or coupon for the contents. Send the recipe cards on each month for a year, two at a time each week, or whatever schedule works best.

8. Make sure to include photos and memories on the cards along with the recipes.

WHO COOKED UP COOKBOOKIN’™

Jackie Wynia listens to her mother, Rose. About six years ago, when many of the kids in the family were getting to the age where they were starting to cook for themselves, they began to call their grandma for recipes. Rose asked Jackie, a designer and long-time craft industry professional, to come up with recipe cards, stickers, and other supplies to use for the cookbooks she wanted to make for her grandchildren. She couldn’t find what she wanted in any store. Jackie paid attention when her friends had similar requests. She decided to create the ingredients she and her family and friends needed - papers, binders, embellishments and more, all devoted exclusively to food, cooking, and recipe memories. Cookbookin’™ started in the back burner of Jackie’s brain, bubbled over when she and her team of illustrators and graphic artists got busy designing, and baked to perfection when Sulyn Industries decided to manufacture the products.
