I knew immediately I wanted to write a “Fathers” article for this month. Not that the other subjects didn’t speak to me but family is something I am very passionate about, especially my parents. Whether it’s the relationship between you and your father, your children and their father or a father figure in your life, don’t forget to document those guys on your scrapbook pages!

One of the great things about scapbooking is we can document those special relationships we have, or we can make a mini album to let them know how special they are to us. I guess for me my Father is extra special as my Dad isn’t my biological father, he’s my stepfather. For me, that makes him twice as special. Now, I’m not saying we’ve always had a great relationship because we haven’t. Our relationship took time, but I definitely appreciate the fact that he took on a ready-made family, not an easy task, and he accepted me as his daughter immediately. My Dad definitely deserves the title “#1 Dad”.

Of course the reason Fathers weigh so heavily on our minds this time of year is because Fathers Day is just around the corner, on June 15th. Great gifts for Father’s day include mini books, and handmade projects, and as crafters we can easily make personalized one of a kind cards. For masculine cards I tend to go with geometric shapes. Circles and squares make great pattern choices and nothing says “guy” like checks or stripes! Just like the layout above where I drew the colors of the layout from the shirt, think of the patterns on men’s shirts and look for those similar designs in your patterned paper. One thing is for sure, flowers aren’t going to cut it for a masculine “guy” card!

This hanging picture makes a fantastic Father’s Day alternative to the usual gift. Choose the sweetest, most endearing photograph you have and Dad won’t be able to resist. He can hang it in his garage or workshop. It’s bound to bring a smile to his face and I’m sure he will treasure it for years.

So think about documenting your relationship with your father. Make him a one of a kind handmade gift or card and show him how special you really think he is!
