The season of fun is upon us, where all the children dress up and go wild, and if they are lucky the adults do too! Yes, Halloween is quickly approaching and I for one love this holiday. We definitely do Halloween in style with decorations, lots of treats and costumes.

If you’re giving treats this Halloween, how about getting prepared ahead of time. If you’re like me you have 2 separate bowls of candy for the trick-or-treaters, one for big kids and one for little kids (no gum). But for parties and gatherings I prefer to make party favor bags and boxes. Naturally the easiest to make is the simple bag topper - a cellophane bag with a folded paper closure at the top and embellished with some die-cut stickers. The simplicity of this design means that this is a great project to make with the children!

The bag toppers are nice, but everyone does bag toppers, so why not try something a little more elaborate. There are lots of bag and box templates available that means making unique containers is simply a matter of tracing, cutting and folding! This small gift bag measures 4”x 5” and is the perfect size for Halloween candy! Embellish with a simple die-cut charm.

Whilst there are many templates to make your own boxes, some craft manufacturers have done the hard work for you making die cut boxes in many different sizes, shapes and styles. This take out box by Hot Off The Press is all ready for embellishing, then simply fold, fill and you’re ready to party.

Once you start making the treat containers you realize that some could do double duty! How about using a treat container as a place card! This swirl container would look great with party guests’ names where the sentiment sticker is placed. If I were to use them as place cards for this situation I would use die-cut letters, after all the beauty of cutting your own letters is that you’ll never run out of vowels!

One thing to remember when doing party favors is to cater appropriately to your guests’ ages. For example a bag topper works well for younger children but not so much for older children who would maybe prefer a bag-style favor. For adults I’d recommend the box templates. Remember to ‘think outside the box’ too, these containers don’t just have to contain candy, small party favor gifts work well too!

Hope you all have a happy Halloween!
