From the beginning of time people have been mesmerized by books, the stories they tell, the details they possess and the ability to elapse back into time when reading and holding one. Books allow us to envision other worlds, and daydream about what we could be doing in those worlds, while scrapbooking allowed us to create our own worlds in a personal book, which was our private world.

The Victorians revisited scrapbooking which was actually around awhile, even Marie Antoinette kept a scrapbook, it was these books which normally housed a mod podge of ephemera, clippings, photos and stories that paved the way for scrapbooking and collage.

Today scrapbooking has taken yet another turn into the world of altered arts and dimension, with the use of 3D embellishments, unconventional sizes, papers and books. This project I have created is called a Fax Cabinet Card Book, which mixed the elements of scrapbooking, altered art, collage and unconventional book binding, using a discarded book, matte board, images and embellishments. I hope this project will enable you to escape into your own storybook world.

Materials -Old or discarded hard cover book (no dust jacket) -5 strands white paper floral wire, cut into 6 inch strips -Photo matte board or chip board, Paper Source -Linen or matte computer paper, Paper Source -5 vintage ballerina fashion plate images -5 copies of the back lettering of a cabinet card -Vintage piano paper and ephemera -5 medium sized buttons -5 large gold toned buttons -Glitter: Silver, Gold, German Glass, Art Institute of Glitter -Stickles, Ranger Ink -Glues: Aileens tacky glue, glue stick, hot glue -Tools: Scissors, exacto knife, ¼ hole punch, Martha Stewart photo rounder punch, stylus tool, ruler, wire pliers and hot glue gun -Other: ribbons, trims, Dresden, beads, broken jewelry, tulle, lace, crepe paper, millinery flowers and embellishments from Prima

Directions 1. Remove the contents of a discarded book by using an exacto knife, leaving the first and last page connected to it. This will leave you with a book shell, set aside. 2. Measure 5 inch by 7 inch size onto a 5 pieces of photo matte board, cut out with exacto knife, using photo rounder punch, round the points of the cut matte board. Repeat this step for all 5 pieces of cut matte board. 3. Locate 5 vintage fashion plate images, and size to 5 inch by 7 inch in your favorite computer program, print on linen paper, cut and glue to the matte board using a glue stick, repeat on the remaining matte boards. 4. Photo copy the ornate lettered backing of a vintage cabinet card, 5 times, cut and glue to the black side of the matte boards, using a glue stick. (This will be the lettered backing of your faux cabinet card. 5. Next punch 10 holes grouped into pairs of two. Each pair of two holes must be punched 1/4 inch away from each other, then measure 1 inch and punch the next pair of holes, until you have 5 set pairs of holes. Make sure there is a 1/2 inch space from the top and bottom borders of the matte board and a 1/3 inch from the side border. Repeat for all cut matte boards. 6. Now punch 5 holes into center of book shell, inside the binding part of the book using a stylus tool, space first and last holes 2 inches from book top and bottom, and 1 inch apart from each other. 7. Begin threading your matte board pages to the book using floral wire. Start by threading one cut strand of floral wire through all the pages, leaving enough wire on each end, repeat this step for each hole, using a new piece of cut wire each time. 8. After you finish threading the wires through the pages, then thread a medium sized button through the wire end pairs, when done you’ll have attached 5 medium sized buttons to the pages, still with wire ends left over. 9. Once all holes and pages have been threaded with floral wire and medium buttons, gather each pairs wire ends and thread through the one hole of the book, then thread through a gold button, twist around button, pierce close with wire pliers, repeat this for each pair, until all holes in the book have been threaded and attached with a button 10. Now you are ready to begin embellishing your pages and book covers with glitter, trims, ribbons, Dresden, tulle, crepe paper, jewels, and beads.

Tips: -Glue four pieces of velvet ribbon from Prima Marketing Inc. to the inside covers for a vintage look and to tie book closed. -If vintage fashion plates aren’t available, try using rubber stamps w/vintage scenes or people, stamped onto sturdy cardstock, and colored in with inks, try using Ranger Inks and Pan Pastel chalks. -Cover the back of your pages with old piano paper or elegant scrapbook paper by Making Memories or Prima International. -If you can’t find gold tone buttons, paint wooden ones or plastic ones with metallic gold paint or the paint of your choice.
