I decided to create this project after noticing a huge blank spot above the mirror in my entryway. I needed something nice to fill the space and knew I could create it myself. I came across Rusty Pickle's HOME chipboard set and knew it would be perfect for my space. I chose Bo Bunny's Beautiful Life collection to match the decor of my home. My first floor is decorated in a palette of fall colors, so these papers coordinate perfectly. Edging the project with metallic copper paint and embellishing it with paper leaves & stickers adds dimension. I like to include an element of surprise in my projects. The surprise here is the addition of twine, it adds a bit of a rustic flair to an otherwise refined design.

Inspired by my eight year old, who recycles and reuses all of her craft supplies, I decided to create a second HOME project. By using the chipboard pieces surrounding the letters from my first HOME project, I created a second entire project for little additional cost. For the second project, I added flannel leaves, copper eyelets and organdy ribbon.

In my first effort to craft in a greener way, I was able to create two beautiful projects, one for me and one as a gift for a friend. Saving money and reducing waste, two themes we see constantly in the world around us, joined together with the world of papercrafting.

1 Gather Supplies. Separate each letter from its surrounding chipboard. Reserve surrounding chipboard for H-O-M-E Project #2.
  • Brad: leaf (Creative Impressions)
  • Chipboard: HOME set (Rusty Pickle)
  • Paint: copper metallic acrylic (Tulip)
  • Paper leaves: Prima Marketing, Inc.
  • Patterned paper: Back to Basics Beautiful Life Collection (Bo Bunny)
  • Stickers: Beautiful Life Collection (Bo Bunny)
  • Twine: 3 ply natural jute

2 Choose a paper to cover each letter. Trim paper a little larger than the letter to be covered. Working outside or in a spray box, cover the surface of the chipboard letter with spray adhesive. Lay paper over the chipboard letter, pressing down to ensure adhesion. Allow the project to dry according to the spray adhesive directions. Repeat process for each chipboard letter.

3 Place a chipboard letter, paper side down on a self-healing cutting mat. Using a craft knife, trim the excess paper from around the chipboard letter. Be careful to trim as close to the letter as possible, by running the craft knife up against the letter’s edge. Repeat process for each chipboard letter.

4 Using a small foam paint brush and acrylic craft paint, paint the edge of each chipboard letter. Take care to paint a thin line over the paper’s edge, continuing around the chipboard letter’s edge. Repeat process for each chipboard letter. Set the letters on wax paper to dry.

5 OPTIONAL STEP – When the paint dries, turn each letter over and paint its reverse side. Allow the letters to dry on the wax paper. This step adds a finished look to the project, and is especially nice when the back side of the project will be visible when hung.

6 Embellish the letters with paper leaves, adhere them with Glue Dots. Add cardstock stickers, some embellished with brads.

7 For a rustic look, use garden twine to tie the finished chipboard letters together.

You can also use the reverse image of the letters to make a coordinating sign. Or mix the two types of letters together for another version.
