Originally only letters were manufactured, similar to stickers but with the ability to adhere to anything. Imagine the possibilities, we crafters sure did, and the scrapbook manufacturers certainly did and they became more and more imaginative with the products they created. Since their conception into the craft industry rub-ons have certainly come a long way. Nowadays they are available as letters, quotes, stitching, flowers and numerous other designs. Previously the original rub-ons were only available in black, now you can get almost any color imaginable including white, which really pops on a dark background. In the image below you can see two layered rub-ons of a heart design and colored flower.
The great thing about rub-ons compared to stickers is that you can cut, swap, change, and alter the layout and/or shape of the quote or title. On the image below you can see a rub-on quote adhered to a journaling page. The original rub-on was much longer and wouldn’t fit in the space provided, but with some rearranging of the spacing and putting multiple words on one line the quote now fits perfectly. This cutting method also works for rub-on titles on a curve etc.
By far the biggest advantage to rub-ons is their ability to adhere to just about any surface including paper, cardstock, photographs, metallics and acrylics. Rub-ons adhere well to photographs without obscuring or distracting from the photographs focus.
Rub-ons really have come a long way since being brought into the scrapbooking arena, if you haven’t already tried them how about picking some up on your next trip to the scrapbook store? Or if you do use rub-ons already, how about finding new and unusual ways to use them on your projects? They really are very versatile!
