One good way to keep layouts from looking flat or boring is to find creative ways to add texture and dimension to your pages. We can add dimension in many ways. The trick is to do it without adding a lot of unnecessary bulk, which can harm pages or result in lumpy scrapbook albums.

Today’s patterned papers and cardstocks are a great way to add subtle dimension without adding bulk. Many companies offer pre-embossed paper and cardstock, which is great for the busy scrapbooker since embossing can be a pretty time consuming technique. Textured papers have come a long way with many different types now available. Whether you choose embossed, glittered, foiled, flocked, sanded, or any of the other options, you are sure to find some patterned paper to suit your texture or dimensional needs!

As you can see on the layout below, I chose foiled paper. Foiled paper is great for layouts that need a little “bling” and shine, and they suit wedding/bridal themed layouts perfectly. They’re also good for graduations, engagements, etc.

Another way to add some subtle dimension and texture is with stickers. Stickers have come so far since their conception and, like papers, you can now buy pre-embossed, pre-glittered, 3D, gem stone and die cut, just to name a few! On the layout above I chose glittered stickers, 3D stickers, stickers with small rhinestones, embossed stickers and stickers on clear backgrounds.

All in all, using several different types of texture and dimension really makes for an eye-catching layout! Next time you sit down to scrapbook, stop and think about the different ways you can add some texture and dimension to your layout!
