Getting your scrapbook stuff organized can be one of the scariest things ever! We keep buying things and most of the time these things stay in a bag tucked away somewhere until we forget we even have it. Now, if you’re like me, you don’t have a free day, weekend, or the weeks it may take to get your craft supplies organized but here are 5 easy tips to get you started.

Does your space look like this?

1. Start off slow. Don’t get overwhelmed by boxes, bags, and containers full of stuff. Map out how you want your space to look whether you have a small corner to work with or a room dedicated to your supplies. It’s just like when you were a kid, if you don’t have a plan or some type of guidance you will look at your room and burst into tears not knowing where to start. Take a look at our past articles to help you begin planning your space.

2. Commit to taking the organization process one step at a time. The reason most New Year’s resolutions fail is because we fail to plan and to set ourselves up for success. It’s okay to admit you don’t know where to start or how to organize as long as you’re proactive with it and do your homework. Every month, we focus on giving you the organization skills necessary to become a truly organized scrapper. Check back often for new ideas!

3. Establish your goals and write them down. Be more specific than just saying “This year, I want to get organized”. How do you want to do it? When do you want to have your paper organized? What do you want your space to look like? Set timeframes and you’ll be more likely to meet your deadlines. Perhaps January is just for planning then February you set up your space. If you can only dedicate an hour a week to your craft space, you can achieve much more with a plan of action than by just staring aimlessly at the room or searching through the chaos.

4. Get together with friends for an Organization Party. This may seem strange but if you have one friend who is really organized maybe they can give others tips. If none of you are organized, get together and assign everyone to bring at least one article or helpful tip to get you all started. Attending a crop is tons of fun but if you can’t find your stuff to take with you, what’s the use, you’ll just end up talking so why not discuss how to better prepare for the next crop. Plan to vary your meeting place so everyone has a chance to give input and share ideas.

5. Celebrate your organization successes. No matter how little or big your organization achievements, share them with others. Take before and after pictures of every step of the process so you can track how far you’ve gone. If your first step is drawing out the plan for your space, share it with friends and get feedback. If you took the big step of purging things you’ll never use, donate the good stuff to a local school, church, kid’s club or other community organization. You’ll feel great that your stuff is going to good use and not just sitting around the house being wasted.

Our wish for you is to get you as organized as possible so you can enjoy scrapbooking without the stress of searching through boxes, bags, and miscellaneous containers. Organization is truly a process that doesn’t happen over night. It takes time, effort, and patience to make it happen and you can do it one step and one bag at a time.
