Autumn Shells
Tips & Techniques by Penny Crocker Wasmund
Find a store near you! Printable Project Card
Intermediate—This project uses the Bargello method, text from pages in a book, and a simple rubber stamp to create a colorful card.
Supplies
  • Golden Yellow Cardstock (Artist's Own)
  • Pale Peach Cardstock (Artist's Own)
  • Pages from and old hardback book (Artist's Own)
  • White Copy Paper (Artist's Own)
  • Clearbox Fluid Chalk Inks: Yellow Ochre, Topaz, Creamy Brown, CopperSwift, Dusty Plum, Stucco (Clearsnap, Inc.)
  • Adirondack Mark - Cranberry (Ranger)
  • VersaFine Ink - Onyx Black (Tsukineko)
  • Glue Stick (UHU)
  • Personal Trimmer (Creative Memories)
  • Shell Stickers (Miss Elizabeth's)
  • Scissors (Artist's Own)
  • Metal Ruler (Westcott)
Instructions

1. Tear 2-3 pages from an old hardback book (I used discarded pages from my Altered Books).

2. Take chalk inks and rub directly over the page, covering about 6 lines of text from left to right with each color, as strips of color will be cut between lines of text.

3. Cut 2 strips of each color, cutting between lines of text. Strips can be the same width or they can vary in width. Arrange colors on table from lightest to darkest.

4. Rub glue stick over a piece of copy paper, about the width of each strip. Begin laying down the strips going from lightest to darkest and then graduating back to lightest. Ex. A-B-C-D-E-F-E-D-C-B-A. (Be sure to butt them against each other so there are no gaps)

5. Cut out this rectangle of strips, cutting right to edge all the way around..

6. Turn this block of color 1/4 turn and use personal trimmer to cut new strips, cutting across all colors at once. Cut strips of varying widths.

7. Use glue stick to glue strips down to peach cardstock, varying the widths so no two together are the same width.

8. Use metal ruler to create a thin border around peach panel using cranberry marker.

9. Mount peach panel to card front with glue stick.

10. Arrange stickers from shell sticker sheet at bottom of Bargello pattern.

11. Stamp "Happy Birthday" in black over card front.
