Altered Bento Box Card Holder
Earth Day by Nathalie Jane “Cabbie” Lopez
Find a store near you! Printable Project Card
I have always been fascinated with creating things ranging from house wares to anything I can think of. Plastics and wood are my favorites especially those that are meant to be thrown away or they might just be stuffs which catch my eye. My scrapbook friends used to call me “garbage” girl because I would tell them not to throw away their scrapbook packages but instead hand me over those gorgeous packages and I might turn them into something useful. To date, I have been making those packages into card holders, storage for non-scrapbook items and some pen stands. Recycling is very important because not only would this be beneficial to our environment but of course it will also improve creativity in our midst by trying to think out of the box. Just imagine tons of those packages being thrown away and besides, scrapbooking packages are still beautiful in their own way even without the contents inside, a little twist will turn them into something beautiful again. I believe being able to create and recycle is a form of art, a way to express oneself either to the extreme or just putting your passion into work. Sometimes garbage is not really garbage at all.
Supplies
  • Bling: Prima Marketing Inc.
  • Brads: Bazzill Basics
  • Button: BasicGrey
  • Chipboard: Butterflies and Bugs (Maya Road)
  • Die cuts: 5th Avenue (Making Memories)
  • Felt powder: Craft World
  • Fiber
  • Flower: Prima Marketing Inc.
  • Glaze: Diamond Glaze (Judikins)
  • Glue: Mod Podge (Plaid)
  • Others: wooden chopsticks, plastic bento box
  • Paints: acrylic (Making Memories )
  • Paper Piercer: Making Memories
  • Patterned paper: We R peasant countryside (We R Memory Keepers)
  • Ribbons: Crate Paper
  • Stamps: mini stamp (Inque Boutique)
  • Tools: Crop-a-dile
Instructions

1. Trace and cut pattern paper the shape of the bento box.

2. Paint the surface of the paper with Mod Podge.

3. When dry, attach embellishments to the pattern paper.

4. Paint the edges with acrylic paint.

5. Use crop-a-dile to attach eyelet on each side of the pattern paper. Likewise, do this with the bento box by measuring halfway on both sides.

6. Use the paper piercer to pierce holes on the pattern paper. The holes should run from the top to the bottom and can be anywhere because once torn, this will act as the opening where you scoop the insides with the chopsticks. For this project, I drew a line midway on the pattern paper.

7. Paint chopsticks with acrylic paint.

8. Stamp with images.

9. Attach ribbon with brad and slide it through the two sticks.

10. Appose both holes of the pattern paper and bento box and tie with fibers.

11. For the butterfly chipboard accent, paint with glue and pour felt powder. After few minutes, paint edges with acrylic paint and Diamond Glaze.

12. You can use the bento box as a card holder. Just use the chopsticks to scoop out your handmade card.

I am Cabbie Lopez from Manila, Philippines. I am a stay at home mother to 4 boys. I started scrapbooking 3 years ago and from that time on, it opened a lot of creative inputs into my life. I am also honored to be named the first Scrappinmoms Idol, a local 2-month scrapbooking competition conducted last 2006. I love to experiment with different techniques using different media. I also enjoy altering stuffs and love the shabby chic and vintage designs but I can be flexible too. Photography has also a place in my heart mainly focusing on macro photography. Aside from scrapbooking, books, tin cans, journals and any vintage elements turn me on. Currently, I am one of the designers for 3 sites, one for a local scrapbooking store and 2 international challenge blogs. Some of my works have also been featured in various e-zines and I have been guest designing for the past few months with some international blogs and local stores as well. More of me and my creations at http://cabbiejanescrapper.blogspot.com.
