Are you looking for something to use in your scrapbook that is inexpensive, adds texture without the bulk and is available in almost any color or pattern? Fabric is your answer. Take a few page ideas with you to the local fabric store and you will be amazed at what you can find that will work with your papers and photos.
There are many ways to incorporate fabric in your pages. One way is as a simple border. All you need to do is cut a piece to 12” wide and place it on your page. In the following example the fabric is tulle and it is tied near the bottom to give more volume.
Ribbons are all the rage on scrapbook pages. Fabric can be used in just the same way. You can cut or tear the fabric into thin strips and use it just like you would ribbons. The next layout shows the fabric tied through holes punched in the photo.
Another very simple way to use the fabric is as a colorblocking element. Cut a square or rectangle and mix it with paper squares and rectangles to give a mix of texture. You can also unravel the edge a bit for a distressed look. The following layout shows a fabric square slipped under the corner of the photo.
If you don’t want to buy the fabric yourself, you can also purchase pre-made fabric embellishments. These are as easy as buying them and sticking them on your page. The following layout shows a self-adhesive fabric tab on the top left corner of the photo.
Fabric can also be used in more traditional ways, such as in pockets or titles. You could cut a pocket off a piece of clothing or you could cut fabric paper into the shape of a pocket. The next layout uses pre-made twill pockets and letters that are self-adhesive.
Not only is fabric great for accenting your photos, but you can also print your photos directly on fabric. The pictures come out looking like a canvas and you can distress the edges of the photos with sandpaper to give a fun look. The next layout uses fabric sheets that are designed to go through the printer.
