Handmade valentines have been exchanged for hundreds of years. The first known Valentine’s Day card to be exchanged in the United States was dated in the early 1800’s. Greeting card manufacturers had taken over the business until recently! The trend is heading back towards making your own cards.
I can remember my elementary school days where we spent weeks designing our card box, using construction paper, school glue, paper doilies and markers in every shade of red and pink. I also remember making my own valentine cards to exchange with my classmates. Mine were usually pretty simple—just cut out hearts with “Be Mine” or “Love You" written on them. Occasionally I would add some glitter, or maybe a smaller heart glued on.
When I started stamping, the first set of stamps I purchased was a Valentine’s Day set. I’ve used it for 5 years in a row now to make handmade Valentine’s Day cards! I’ve given them to every member of my family, my husband, my friends, and even my dog! I’ve always enjoyed being able to get many different looks from the same stamp set. It increases the versatility of my stamps and reminds me what a good investment they can be.
I’ve used several stamp sets, and some basic scrapbooking products to create the cards and layouts shown here. Whether you are looking for something simple for your children to make, or something elegant to give to your special someone, look no further than your scrapbooking or rubberstamping supplies.
Have fun!
