August is here and even those of us in the more northern climates are feeling the heat! Whether you are cooling off at the beach, in the pool or under the sprinkler, be sure to bring your camera along. Outdoor settings make the best backdrops for photographs and don’t our kids look adorable in their little swimsuits?

Summer pictures are so much fun to scrapbook. This is your chance to pull out those beautiful bright colors that have been waiting in your stash. In the first example the vivid colors add life to the photos. I have used aqua blue to coordinate with the pool colours. The tangerine orange works well as a complementary color as it is a similar intensity to the blue. A dull pumpkin orange would not have the same effect here! The Brilliance Pearlescent inks by Tsukineko add a shimmery touch to the accents in the layout. I further enhanced them with clear glass beads.

In the next example Michelle Josie has warmed up her pool images with vivid reds and pinks. The stickers are dressed up by stamping speckles over them then embossing the whole piece with Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel (UTEE). This gives the piece a raised glassy finish, a look that coordinates well with the pool pictures. With beach pictures you have several ways you can go. You can bring out the bright colors in the kids clothing, pick up the earthly rugged look of the outdoor setting, or try a cool sophisticated look. The purple and yellow in the following layout is another example of using complementary colors. The accents were stamped on small squares of yellow cardstock again using Pearlescent ink. To create the fish border, slip a scrap piece of paper underneath the layout and repeatedly stamp the fish school stamp across the bottom of the page allowing the stamp to go off the edge. A piece of magic mesh was added for texture then hanging charms complete the layout. Torn layers of vellum and cardstock mimic the look of waves and sand in the following beach example. Torn vellum is perfect for beach pages as it leaves a thin white edge that resembles the white caps on the waves. Michelle stamped her title and added small shells to her layout. Note how she tucked the corners of her photos under the torn cardstock as if they were partially buried in sand. The classy look of pale blue and black together is perfect for the black and white photos in the next layout. The three smaller photos highlight each of the children from the larger photo. A torn edge along the bottom creates interest and gives this clean layout an outdoorsy touch. The date was stamped with watermark ink right on top of the black stamped title. The black shows through the watermark ink for a really eye catching title. In the following layout I gave the beach picture a masculine setting with liberty cardstock and embossed gold accents. The border was made by stamping the shells randomly on a strip of natural cardstock then embossing them with gold powder. When you do this be sure to put a piece of scrap paper under your border strip and stamp over the edge. This will give a more random effect. The extra shell was cut out and mounted with foam tape to give some dimension. Do you have a child that loves to pose in her swimsuit? Why not create a mini book just for her! Michelle’s daughter loves her swimsuits so much she will even wear them under her clothes in the winter. The next layout will be the title page for a mini album dedicated to her little swimsuit model. The bright colors and 3-D stickers are adorable on this page. The bubble letters were stamped and colored in with a bright pink. White accents added to the letters with a gel pen make them appear three-dimensional. The script letters were cut out and mounted with pop dots to make this a very dimensional page.

Whether you like clean lines, earth tones or bright and lively colors, summer layouts are fun to do. Be sure to take lots of pictures of your family members soaking up the sun!
