Valentine’s Day is the perfect occasion for you to create gifts to give to your friends. Dominos are fun and easy to embellish and offer many possibilities to suit your creative mood. They can be made into jewelry or a decorative item for a desk. Your friends will be delighted and surprised to receive these Valentine tokens.
Dominos have a non-porous surface, so you may want to condition them before beginning. Conditioning the domino changes the surface, helping the ink to adhere. The dominos used in the examples were soaked overnight in a solution of laundry bleach and water. This reduced the glossiness and gave it some “tooth” to hold the ink.
A light coating of ink is all that is needed to give the domino some color. Do not apply too much or it may not dry thoroughly. It is important to heat set the ink each time a new color or layer is applied.
This domino pin has a marbled background. The effect was achieved by using a paper towel to apply three different colors of chalk ink in a random manner, one color at a time, and heat setting between applications. A pin back is added to the domino, turning it into a piece of jewelry to be worn on a sweater or coat.
A rotary tool easily cuts through a domino, making it possible to hang the domino from a chain, or in this case, from a key chain. This is a perfect gift for the man in your life.
If you do not have a rotary tool for drilling, try wrapping a domino with wire. A thin piece of wire was threaded through the opening of a bead to form a loop that connects the domino to the cord with a jump ring.
Try using a Rust Antiquing Kit to give a domino a whole new look. Follow manufacturer’s directions when applying the solutions. Since it takes all night for each layer to dry, this is a project that cannot be completed in a single evening.
This domino is great as a small paper weight for a desk. Or you can add a magnetic strip to its back.
Remember to condition your dominos before starting these projects. You are sure to come up with new and creative uses for dominos once you get started.
