These projects are perfect for the beginning and intermediate stamper.

I journal because it helps me to recall the thoughts and feelings I had during my travels while also documenting my activities. Sometimes only a single word or a color used on a page can bring back vivid memories.

Journaling need not be complicated. On trips that last for more than a day, I take along my journal and some simple tools which fit into a small plastic case. These tools include scissors, double sided tape, glue stick, pens, watercolor pencils, glassine envelopes and a water color brush. I want to enjoy the journey and record the event but not labor over the process of journaling. Often times I prepare the pages ahead of time by applying color. Then it is just a matter or adding sketches, clippings, and text. More can be added when you return home.

On a day trip, I leave behind my journal but take along a notebook, pencils and envelope. Once home, I create my journal entry from my notes and any findings I pick up along the way.

One day I hope to make all my own journals from start to finish. Now though, I use blank art books. They are readily available in art or craft stores and the pages are ideal for applying many techniques. I used a sketch book for "Travel Journal." This was the first time I’ve used this type of book and found that the pages are not well suited for paints or water.

The journal covers were removed and collaged with background paper, a few embellishments and stamps. If you will be traveling with your journal it is best to keep the cover free from too many embellishments. They can be added later.

I am fortunate to have a long summer vacation from my job which affords me the time to take day trips with my youngest son and weekend trips as a family. The first journal page depicts a recent canoe trip in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. My memories of the day are of the hours spent canoeing through the vivid green forest. Traveling at just one and a half miles an hour gives you the opportunity to take in all the quiet and beauty.

The background for this page was created from layers of Spectra tissue paper, lending the page a watercolor effect.

A favorite day trip is to the Gettysburg Battlefield and Cemetery. After many visits, we still have not seen all the monuments. Our children especially enjoy the Devil’s Den area.

The cemetery is a stark reminder of those who lost their lives at Gettysburg and the battles which followed.

For a day of fun, you cannot beat Hershey Park and the thrill of riding the coasters. Just as the day gets too hot to handle any more rides, we head to our favorite restaurant, the Circular Dining Room at Hotel Hershey. It is a meal complete with memorable desserts.

Journaling should be fun. Relax and record your thoughts and feelings, and add a little art too.
