Last week we picked out and prepared our cigar box for altering. This week lets talk about how we are going to decorate it. Do you want to choose a specific theme, technique or process? Are you making this as a gift for someone or is it for yourself. The theme I choose was family. With the holidays quickly approaching I wanted to make a vintage cigar box purse that celebrates family.
Because I wanted to celebrate family and I wanted it to be vintage I needed to gather up some papers, pictures, ephemera and notions that could be used to decorate the cigar box. I thought about using some old family photographs, but my family doesn’t have any vintage photos. What I needed was some instant relatives. So I turned to Design Originals and Beth Cote’s books “Ephemera” and “More Ephemera” and they had just the images I needed for instant old vintage family photos. I clipped out the images I wanted to use and headed off to my local rubber stamp store to find some papers and other items that would match.
I’m always up for a trip to the local stamping and scrapbook store and this “hunt” for objects turned out to be a lot of fun. I found a bunch of papers, some cording and some stickers that matched the photos and the theme. I always enjoy my trips to the small local retail stores, as opposed to the giant craft retailer. The staffs there are friendly, helpful and interested in what I’m up to. They enjoy their jobs and it shows and what’s more they know their products and how to use them. They are such a valuable resource.
So now that I have gathered up all my items that I want to make part of the box, I am ready to begin the actual altering process. Join us next week to see how we begin the altering process for the outside of the cigar box. See you next week! Here’s a tease of the front side of the box!
