Unlike more delicate papers, textured cardstock is a durable choice for your layouts. Its uneven surface provides dimension and, as the name implies, texture to your pages. It is heavy enough to support multiple layers of paper and embellishments.
In “Blessed Are the Joymakers”, pieces of textured cardstock from Bazzill Basics Paper Rainbow Multi-Pack are used. To start the project, Raven cardstock serves as the background nicely complementing both the black and white photo and the bright colors from the Rainbow Multi-Pack. Die cut flowers are made from textured cardstock in orange, yellow, green, purple, red, and blue all included in the Rainbow Multi-Pack. Journaling is printed in coordinating colors on white cardstock. Brads in various sizes are mixed and added throughout the layout to reflect the bouncy fun the children are having in the photo. For a final touch, a strip of orange satin ribbon is tied in a bow adding a childlike touch to the bold colors and textures.
If you don’t have textured cardstock readily available, you can follow these techniques to create texture for your projects. In this “Love” card, two small pieces of cardstock were torn and crumpled to frame stamped heart in the center of the card. This simple technique adds not only dimension but flare as well. Notice too, the strip of cardstock that is torn, sewn, and adhered behind the crumpled cardstock adding another layer to the depth of the card.
A second technique you can use to create texture with your cardstock is shown in this layout. To get the vintage brushed look demonstrated here, ink the edges of each piece of cardstock using the direct-to-paper technique with coordinating inks. The direct-to-paper technique is a simple way to add texture to any layout by brushing the ink pad directly across the cardstock where desired. Complement the layout with ribbon, brads, and decorated hearts.
So, now you know some of the creative functions of textured cardstock. But, don’t let this be the end of your creativity. Try other techniques with your cardstock. You may be surprised with the possibilities you discover.
