As we salute our military heroes on Memorial Day, let us not forget the daily sacrifices each man and woman makes to protect our freedom and liberty. To show our appreciation, this Paper article will give you ideas to use military paper collections to make a patriotic layout and step-by-step instructions to make a memorable shadow box.

Memorial Day is a time to show how proud you are for the service of our military heroes. This layout designed by Chris Hermann incorporates this ideal with classic colors, patriotic phrases and good old fashion denim. The patterned paper used here is from Karen Foster Design’s military paper collection and includes Patriotic and Flags paper along with American Phrases. Copies of a photo and U.S. Navy Training Certificate are added for memorabilia. The mix of red and brown paper and blue denim provides contrast to the black and white copies making this a layout to remember.

This is a variation of the first layout using red, white and blue stars tied with thin rope at the top and a block of matted patterned paper and torn cardboard for a journaling space. The next image shows another way to design this layout. Here, two blocks of the paper and cardboard are added along with stars and denim. These blocks can be used as mattes for photos, memorabilia, or journaling.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to create a Memorial Day Shadow Box Tribute Collage designed by Chia Wald.

SUPPLIES:
  • 1 8 ½” x 8 ½” piece of solid black foam board
  • 1 8 ½” x 11” piece of colored cardstock (for background)
  • 1 12” x 12” piece of decorative scrapbook paper for frame (Creative Imaginations)
  • “The United States Navy” and “Navy Seal” collage images (K & Company LLC)
  • Glue: Art Institute Designer Dries Clear
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Stylus
  • Bone Folder
  • Scissors
  • Cutting Knife
  • Foam Tape
  • Assorted Stickers (Karen Foster Design)
  • Pictures
  • Finished size 8 ½” x 8 ½”

On each of the 8 ½” x 8 ½” pieces of foam board cut out the center sections, leaving a ¾” border on all four sides, to form frames.

Cut the colored cardstock to 8 ½” x 8 ½”. Glue it to the back of one foam board frame.

Using photos, stickers and cut out sections of scrapbook paper plan your layout.

Select a few items to highlight by elevating them on pieces of foam tape.

Glue all items in place. Glue the second foam board frame on top of the first one. This step is done here because it’s easier to arrange the items when the frame is shallow.

Cut a 6 ½” x 6 ½” opening in the center of the 12” x 12” piece of decorative scrapbook paper. Glue this to the top of the foam board frame. Wrap the edges around to the back and glue in place, trimming corners as needed.

That’s it! Your Shadow Box Collage is ready for display in a table top easel.
