Halloween: The holiday for which children and adults dress up and become someone or something else for a short time. Although we tend to associate it with ghosts and goblins, for most of us Halloween is just good times, laughter and lots of treats. Creating suitable Halloween layouts can be haunting for any scrapbooker, whether you are seasoned or a beginner. But did you know that you don’t have to be a witch to brew up pages that are spooktacular?

Color plays an important role in the over all appearance of your Halloween pages. Always choose a color scheme that will complement your photographs and not distract from them. Orange and black are traditional colors for this holiday, but don’t limit yourself only to their use. Try adding purple or green to liven up your design. These color combinations can be used in either bright or somber shades depending on the mood you want to convey. If you find that these hues are a bit spooky for your taste, simply coordinate the colors from their costumes into the layout.

A good title sets the tone for any page and there are thousands of frightfully delightful phrases that you can use. Inspiration can also be found in disguise if you play on words from the costumes in the photographs. Here are a few of my favorite sayings with Halloween spirit.

  • Too Cute To Spook
  • Carving Out Memories
  • Boo From the Crew
  • I Love Being Witchy
  • Mummy’s Little Monsters
  • Simply Bewitching
  • Spooktacular Halloween
  • Brewing with Fun
  • Happy Haunting
  • Ready, Set, Glow
  • Ghoul Friends
  • The Littlest Pumpkins Have the Biggest Grins
  • Jack-0-Lanterns Are On The Cutting Edge
  • You Are Bootiful
  • Fangs For The Memories
  • I Only Spook When Spooken Too
  • Bugs and Hisses To You

The final element for bewitching your layouts is to distress the elements in your design. Whether you are using purchased embellishments or you prefer to stamp or cut out your own, don’t be scared to rough them up. Tear the edges of your paper instead using your paper trimmer. Don’t forget to bend, fold and crease as well. After tearing, sponge the edges with a black or brown ink pad. These techniques can also be used on photographs, but make sure that you only use a copy.

Now, just combine all of these tips and tricks into a spell of your own and you will have a Halloween album that is absolutely to die for.
