Create quick pages by adding color blocks of cardstock behind your pictures.  Instead of matting your photos straight, try skewing the mat behind the picture.  This technique is a great way to designate a focal picture on your layout.  This method can also be used for patterned paper.  Just be careful not to overpower your pictures with too busy of a pattern.  The key to this technique is picking the right colors to go with your photos.  Just because your pictures are Halloween, doesn’t mean you have to choose bright orange for blocks of color.  Try different shapes like triangles in the corners or squares.  Even just bands of cardstock across your layout can add enough to a page and allow you to get more pages done.

Supplies:

  • Cardstock (Paper Reflections)

  • Black pen (Writer, EK Success)

  • 12” Paper Trimmer (Fiskars)

Trim ¼” off the top and one side of the blue striped paper.  Mount on pink striped paper.  Mount photos on 3 different pink patterned papers, using the paper trimmer.  Cut out a heart, free hand, and mount on pink; cut out leaving about a ¼” border.  Mount photos on page, and then add the die cuts.

Hiking, Winter 1996

Mount main photo on white and then country blue.  Create a third mounting mat in light gray but skew the mat behind this photo.  Mount any other photos in white and then the light gray.  Journal on white cardstock and then mount on country blue.  Mount all photos on a lighter blue than the country blue.  Freehand border in black pen.

The Big Surgery

The Big Surgery

Supplies:

  • Patterned paper and stickers (Bo Bunny Press)
  • Cardstock (Paper Reflections)
  • Paper trimmer and craft knife(12” Personal Paper Trimmer and Swivel Blade, Fiskars)
  • Pen (Zig Twin Tip, EK Success)
  • Adhesive (Hermafix)

The Big Surgery

Mount all photos on pale pink. Using a self-healing mat and craft knife, cut along the outline of the bear, from the top of the right ear, down to the bottom of the right paw. Tuck photo under paw. (I added a sheet of cardstock to the backside of the page because the cut undermines the integrity of the full sheet of paper.) On the second plaid sheet, mount photos on page and add journaling boxes, white on pink cardstock. Embellish second page with a few coordinating stickers.
