Jami's Special Announcement By Jami Petersen Welcome to the September issue. I have a special announcement that I’m too excited to keep secret anymore! Here at the magazine, we are busily preparing for a wild and crazy contest! And though it hasn’t officially started yet, I’m letting the cat out of the bag. You are the first to know about our Funniest Scrapbook Video contest! The contest will run October through November, but I wanted to let you know early so you could start to crank those creative wheels and possibly prepare an entry. Grab your cameras and let’s see what you’ve got! The topic is scrapbooking, of course, and should be an easy target for some hilarious parodies.

Making Faces - Part II By Judi Kauffman for Sakura of America For the projects in Making Faces Part I,(INSERT LINK http://scrapbooking.com/article/71753) I used photos of kids making funny faces as a starting point, with lots of pen work - doodling and words - to personalize and embellish the place mats and note books. Making Faces Part II continues to explore faces, but this time it’s all about the pens and mark making. Solid color cardstock, punches, brads and stickers add to the fun.

Altered Journals By Di Hickman One of my favorite paper crafts, second to cardmaking, is altering journals. Whether for myself, a family member or a friend, a handmade or decorated journal is ideal for writing notes, to-do lists, goals or one’s innermost secrets. I also think back to school days when I'd cover books with paper or fabric, or doodle on the covers (and look how big doodling on scrapbook pages is now!). All these things lead us back to a book, a pen and a way to express ourselves. Personally, I've been journaling since I was about 8 when I was given a five-year diary as a gift. It was something so simple yet it sparked in me a creative need to jot down my thoughts at the end of each day.

Don’t throw it away! By Nathalie Leonelli In this day and age of trying to reduce, reuse and recycle, a lot of fun can be had with packaging (with the same idea behind, see Tracey Locher’s Patriotic Milk Carton Mini Album in the July issue). Look carefully before you throw it away, look at the possibilities it offers you and, if it inspires you, go for it, don’t throw it! Here I am sharing three examples of altered packaging made from things you can find easily.

The Best Kept Die-Cutting Secret in Paper Crafting By Amy Romano I’ve seen a lot of trends in paper crafting over the years. And the past few years, in particular, have been a die-cutting roller coaster ride. Big dies. Little dies. Single dies with multiple shapes. Manual machines you had to push, press, punch, crank. Digital machines using books, disks, or proprietary software programs. It has been a blur of big-ticket, big-learning curve, big-restriction cutting.

To my mom, my friend, I love you By Kimmarie Baker My mom is a one year survivor of breast cancer. She has had a very tough year with other complications due to the cancer. She was in and out of the hospital so many times these past few months from catching infections at the hospital. She is so strong and brave and never missed work. My mom always puts everyone else first, mostly myself and my three daughters. When I saw the spinning photo box, I knew that it would be a perfect gift for her to display some of her favorite pictures. To my mom, my friend, I love you.

Stamping on a Budget By Nicole Polhamus Being a stay at home mom to 4 children and 2 stepchildren does not take away my need for a creative outlet, but it does have a major impact on my paper-crafting budget. When I discovered Hampton Art’s Studio G acrylic stamp sets that sell for $1, I became addicted. Not only are these stamps inexpensive, but they are available in so many cute designs.

Shoot Like a Photojournalist By Ken Kobré When I was a kid my mother – now 98 years old – said that a photo was “no good” unless it had people in it. Our loved ones are the real stars of any family picture – with their names recorded neatly on the back. I’m not saying Mom was the ultimate influence on my direction in photography – photojournalism is about taking pictures of people, after all – but I’m always grateful when I pull a black-and-white out of one of her “historical” boxes.

Gorgeous Isn’t Intimidating By Veronica Melton I love working with acrylic albums, the possibilities are endless and they allow for so many opportunities to layer photos and elements in a whole new way. When creating the pages for this project, I found it was really important to consider the design from both the front side and back side before adhering anything to the album.

The Man You Never Knew By Nancy Jones This project came along as an answer to a lot of my five-year-old daughter's questions of who her grandfather was, what he looked like, and would he like her. With tears in my eyes, I told her he would have undoubtedly loved her. He loves her from heaven. I made this mini album showing the person that he was and how he interacted with people. I have layouts about his heroism and how he died, but I wanted her to have something about the way he lived.

Scrappin’ with Baylee By Cher B. Lashley I have been an artist most of my life and a working artist since my children were still children. Although not always as glamorous as it may seem, especially when meeting deadlines for art shows, my children were always surrounded with lots of creative supplies to have fun with in any manner they chose. Some of my most cherished moments are the ones when they spent time with me in my studio. They loved to try out my new supplies then go back to their favorites with all the concentration a masterpiece deserves. There is absolutely nothing that is so innocently captivating and demonstrates what the true artistic spirit is all about like chubby fingers wrapped around a marker or a little pink tongue tip peeking out from the corner of a bowed lip in total concentration while fairies come to life on newsprint. These are memories of the heart that even a photo cannot really capture; they must be lived.

The Little People By Sookie A. Francisco When my husband and I found out that we were having a girl, we shopped for pinks and yellows. I guess, I can say the same for scrapbooking. The most important thing is to scrap with your subject in mind. Since I am usually scrapping about my daughters, most of my papers are in the shades of pink or yellow. Then, I add trinkets, bling, ribbons, buttons and flowers to it. However, when I have boys in my layout, I usually choose papers and embellishments in strong, primary colors that give a tough, yet fun look.

Memories 2007 By June Geraci Since their move to Florida, my aunt and uncle have been in touch with my grandchildren through phone calls, emails, cards, letters, small gifts for their birthdays and Christmas. I believe they are quite honored to have my grandson's middle name be Vincent, after my uncle. This year, we all traveled from Ohio to visit them. I thought it was appropriate to give them a gift of pictures that were taking throughout the year 2007 of the family. Of course most of the pictures are of my grandchildren, but other pictures include the rest of the immediate family.

Green Birthday Party By Gabriela Delworth Birthday parties in the past were certainly fun and also a creative opportunity to design decorations, invitations, crowns and party hats. We all care about the environment and should recycle and re-use as much as we can to avoid waste. This “Green Birthday Party” was made with a “going green” desire to design something from materials already available at home. So very often we end up with too many birthday hats after the party. This is a blessing in disguise as we can transform them into beautiful new party hats!

Literary Lane By Design Team Young or old, love is what makes the world go round. Grandparents show unconditional love to their adorable grandkids. Husbands and wives love each other through thick and thin. And parents, well, they love their kids no matter how many uh-ohs they clean up and boo-boos they make better. It’s no wonder love is the subject of so many scrapbook pages. Stroll through this month’s Literary Lane for inspiration only love can bring.

Organization: Cluster Effect By Samantha Adams I love clustering my title, buttons, stickers and journaling around my pictures, I think it helps bring out my pictures and the feeling behind them. Clustering is a design aspect that can make all the difference in some layouts, and it’s so easy.

School Memories By Maureen Blackman Did you know that children going to school in the UK wear a school uniform? The first few days are so strange and uncomfortable. Collars and ties are just hateful, for boys and for girls. As a little five year old girl I could not understand why I had to wear a tie – after all, Mummy didn’t. It was so unfair!

List Makers By Judi Kauffman My dad used an office supply store clip to hold together stacks of envelope backs. My mother and I liked pretty papers, notepads that had personality! We were a family who loved pens and pencils. I still do. I like crossing things off my lists as I make my way down the aisle at the grocery or hardware store.

Bursts of Color By Maricar Marte Scrapping kids’ photos are always fun - their innocence, cuteness and bright smiles keep me inspired. It also brings out a child in me as I start playing with my scrap supplies and laying down all the bits and pieces of the layout. Since I'm single and don't have kids, I always ask my brother, cousins and friends for photos of their kids. They never hesitate to give me several! The kids in the following layouts are a few of my favorite little ones.
