Windy City Wonders By Jami Petersen & Stacy Smith Jami and I just got back from attending the Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) Summer Convention and Trade Show in Chicago. CHA is a big event where scrapbooking and craft manufacturers showcase new products, retailers order the hottest supplies for their stores, and editors get to network and play with the latest scrapbook stuff. Believe me, it may seem like all fun and games but being on your feet all day can be tiring. Nevertheless, we had a wonderful time and saw some great new products we will be introducing in the magazine over the next few months. Make sure you visit us often to see the surprises we have in store for you!

Letters to the Editor By Scrapbooking.com Readers The article turned out sooooo cute! Little Anna is just KILLING me… she is so darn CUTE! I just had her on my lap and shared the article with her… even my 18-year-old (who just got here for a visit) immediately started calling her friends telling them that her sister’s article has been published and giving them the link! Anna said, “It’s Me, Mama…look…it’s ME!!! She said she loved it so much she tried kissing the computer screen!

Back to School By Various Artists Probably one of the most profound moments in a mother’s life is when her baby grows up and finally goes off to school. My scrapbooks wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t record the day my oldest son started kindergarten. I love the shots of him before getting on the bus – he was so excited. And than the last one of the bus leaving…that is when it hit me and I went to my car to shed a few happy tears!

We still love to scrap for our family and our history, but we would love to do a bit more. We want our work to be published. We enter and try to win large contests. And we want to be a part of and design for a team. There are hundreds of teams for local scrapbook stores, online kit clubs, magazines and manufacturers, but how do you get onto one of these teams? Join me on a tour of my recent audition for the Cosmo Cricket Design Team… an inside peak of my strategy and my sample projects. I hope you will pick up a trick or two to use for your next big audition!

Olympic Scrapper By Shawn Johnson Shawn Johnson is a typical high school sophomore – on the honor role, loves Zach Effron, shops with her friends. Typical except that she’ll be heading to Beijing as America’s best chance for a gold medal on the US Olympics Gymnastics Team.

Back to School: 4-k Mini Album By Nancy Jones There are many ways to document the first year of school for a child and I set out to take the perfect pictures to make my album memorable. I wanted the entire process of her going to school. I charged the battery to my camera and off we went.

Best Craft Organizers By Dave Martens Every scrapbooker has experienced the same puzzle. How can I organize my craft supplies and find them at the moment I need them? Or I find out that the paper I just purchased I already have. It was just under all that stuff!

Making Faces Part I and Doodle A Day Journal By Judi Kauffman My mother used to say to be careful, that if you made a funny face it might freeze that way! Obviously, like any self-respecting child, I ignored her admonition. Things sure have changed. The other day, our young friends Nina and Daniel were having a contest to see who could make the worst faces, vying for the biggest laughs and groans from the adults as they came up with expressions that were as offbeat and unappetizing as possible. I grabbed my camera to record the event.

What Scrapbooking Is to Me By Mara Melgar-Cruz It’ll be two years in May since I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. My world was turned upside down this day and all I could think of was my two girls, at the time 7 and 4. I thought about their lives without a mother. There is nothing like a mother and I don’t think anyone can ever take a mother’s place. I thought about their birthday parties, graduations, break-ups, periods with cramps, first kisses, holidays, and love. I didn’t want to miss all that so I made a very important decision that day.

Teachers are Special By Various Artists Next to parents, teachers have an important role in our children’s’ lives. My son is in school from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. This is the center of his day and life so it is important that I “capture” those teachers that teach, counsel, encourage and laugh with my son. I meet the teachers at the beginning of the school year during open house.

San Diego By Yasu Kataoka This amazing picture is from my trip to San Diego! The beautiful sunset made my son, Hero, and I dance. We did not even notice my husband take this picture. I used real shells and San Diego bookmarkers that I bought from a souvenir shop. My layout is full of our fun memories!

Ribbon Treasure Box By Maureen Blackman I am a terrible Magpie when it comes to ribbon and can never have enough storage boxes in which to house my little treasures. I can never throw away even the tiniest pieces consequently I am always looking for more containers and boxes. This sturdy case is deceptively roomy and I’m hoping it will stop the panic that sets in when I am desperate to find a particular snippet of ribbon that I put somewhere “for safety”. I know that if I have put something somewhere “safe”, chances are I won’t find it again!

Create Your Own Album Covers By Julie Eickmeier Last Valentine's Day I wanted to create a little album for my daughter and her husband. While I could find a few cute little ones, I wanted one to better capture the love and romance the two of them share. I was able to come up my own by using an embossed chipboard album and adding some Glimmer Mist and some Brilliance ink. The album was a hit.

Card Making: Rock and Roll By Dori Shelton Rock and roll isn’t just for music fans! If you are a stamper and you are looking for a way to add depth and a little pizzazz to your images, then the rock and roll technique is a simple way to accomplish this. This technique works best with solid stamps as opposed to outline images.

Paper Blooms By Sandy Lindsay I made both of these layouts for an online challenge. For this challenge I needed to do a handmade embellishment, so I decided to make some flowers from scrap paper. These flowers are so much fun to make and sometimes I use matching scraps from the layout. Occasionally a layout needs something special to complete the look and for me, many times it’s one of these flowers.

Scrappin’ Around By Cher B. Lashley What do you do when your walls are filled up and your shoebox is full of photos? This is what I was asking myself when I was looking at the adorable poses taken monthly of my granddaughter. I wanted a way to view them in one venue, but didn’t have the time to sit down and scrap eighteen pages. So it was when I was flipping though a home decorating magazine and spied a Christmas ornament that was designed using small circles to make a larger one that the idea took on a life of its own.

“A Pop of Color” Selectively coloring photos and tinting with paper By Bevin Dunn People often ask me how to create a selective area of color in a photo, while making the rest of the image black and white. There are a number of ways to do this, but here is a secret way that not only shows off colorful areas, but also lets you tint the rest of the photo using your background paper! It’s a great technique for minimizing busy photo backgrounds and for showcasing subjects or bright objects.

B is for Baby By Kelly Cranfill I love working with acrylic products and you can find them everywhere now. They come in all sorts of fun shapes and there are so many things you can do with them. This is the first full book I have done with pictures of my baby Grayson, taken during a home photo shoot when he was two weeks old.

Back to School - Part I By Judi Kauffman I have always loved the first day of school, that wonderful mix of old friends and new teachers, the excitement of learning new things swirled together with art class and spelling bees. And, oh, those school supplies! The big box of crayons, pencils waiting to be sharpened, a shiny ruler, and best of all, a binder in which to keep assignments organized.

Everything in Nothing By Sarah Santangelo Fancy flourishes in a variety of media add textural interest to this relatively simple layout. By starting with a solid cardstock and layering drawn flourishes, die-cut and hand-cut flowers, and small pieces of felt, a collaged look has been achieved without adding bulk to the page. The photo has been converted to black and white and enlarged so that it remains the focal point. Using a black and white photo also frees options for choosing colors, allowing you to have greater control over the mood of your page. Simple shapes cut from white cardstock and colored with paints, ink and chalk also customize the look of your page. By changing the color of your cardstock base and die cuts, the same page can be recreated endlessly with completely different feelings.

Proud To Be An American By June Geraci I did this layout for a challenge. The criterion was to do a layout with the theme being a song title. I had this picture of my dad from 1945 and had been putting off scrapping it because there was quite a bit of damage to the original photo from tape residue and the aging process. I was scared to death of trying to improve the photo without ruining it. When this challenge came up I thought it was finally the perfect time. I scanned the original photo and saved it several times on my computer, opened up Photoshop Elements 6 and went to town.

Generations Photo Book By Debbie Kaste My mom comes from a large family – sixteen children to be exact. Her mother also took in other families where there was abuse. Obviously other people took notice of her kind heart. One day, a baby girl was left at her doorstep in a basket. They later adopted and raised her as their own. Every year there is a family reunion. Needless to say it’s a huge gathering. Last time I counted, I had sixty-three first cousins. My aunt is gracious enough to host a party at her home. As a gift for her, I created this mini-generations scrapbook that she could add photos of family members throughout the years.

Photo Corners – Not Just For Photos Anymore By Di Hickman When you begin scrapbooking, one of the staples you will use is photo corners. Photo corners are a great way to add photos to a scrapbook page without actually adhering them to the page. But then what do you do with the big bumper pack of photo corners? Well, you use them as a decorative accent!

Thank You Album for Teacher By Martha Wright When my older son, William, was ready for kindergarten, I really struggled with sending him to public school. His teacher was so wonderful in helping us through that transition. She is an amazing teacher and so full of enthusiasm! It was easy to see that she loved her job, and she would be good for Will.

Die Cuts: Adhesive Alternates By Jenny Dipzinski My mom has always made clothes for me and my siblings. She is absolutely amazing with the sewing machine. When I had my son, she happily made little shirts and vests, and they turned out adorable. However, I knew that when my daughter was born, my mom was secretly jumping with joy knowing she could make beautiful frilly little dresses again. When my brother-in-law announced he was getting married, I knew I wanted to ask my mom to make Gracie’s dress and was not disappointed with the outcome! It was the perfect little dress! My mom is not only amazing with the sewing machine; she’s an amazing person also.

Indulgent Embellishment By Richelle Saldana When I settle in to scrap, I usually let my pictures guide me in product choices. First I start by pulling out specific colors to coordinate with the image; from there I'll select the style or theme. I most enjoy working with candid shots. With the vast selection of scrap products on the market today, it's never a problem finding fun, playful and colorful patterns. The possibilities are only as endless as my imagination. By far, my favorite technique is inking. I use multiple colors and I generously apply them with a makeup sponge. The end result is very rich in color, without any harsh lines.

Inheriting History By Brenda Price As a child growing up in the 50’s and 60’s, picture taking in my family was a rarity. The only camera I remember my parents owning was a Polaroid instant camera and I think it was only used on Christmas. Unfortunately, I don’t have many photos of the homes we lived in, and none of my neighborhood friends. Thank heaven for a dear old aunt who never went anywhere without a camera hanging around her neck. I can remember a lot of eye rolling when my aunt would arrive at every occasion popping flash bulbs and lining everyone up for pictures, often times cutting off her subject’s heads. She had each and every picture made into a slide, and at every family gathering at her home she eagerly prepared for the viewing of the latest slides.

Silly Girls By Richelle Saldana I love my nieces. They bring so much light and love into my world. I’m blessed to have them in my life, so naturally I make scrapbook layouts of them whenever I get a chance. These are just a few of wonderful moments I have captured with my silly girls.

Literary Lane: Back to School By Design Team Remember painstakingly picking out your best outfit, packing a huge lunch (in a new lunch box of course), and not sleeping a wink the night before school started? It’s funny now but back then it was serious business. Kids will have back to school jitters as long as there is a first day of school, and the memory of it all is priceless. We have some funny and inspirational quotes to help you start the new school year off to a great and memorable start!

Paper Magique By Paloma Riera Astarloa My style is very simple though not always spotless. Each layout is different: I can get quite philosophical at times but then, I just want to tell something funny. However, whatever my purpose, I always try to reach some sort of balance without using too many techniques.

Family Feasts By Judi Kauffman When I was young, my family didn’t need an excuse to have a party. With all four grandparents and dozens of cousins living in the same city, all it took was a quick phone call - and a cake - for the crowd to gather. When word spread that my father was going to fire up the grill, the gang descended, neighbors from many nations joining the relatives. Norway, Cuba, it was a veritable United Nations.

Eclectic Acrylic By Kelly Huscher This was such a great project to do! The minute I saw the acrylic house album, I knew I had the perfect pictures for it! In 2003, our family lost a very special member, our Nana. The pictures I chose were taken on one of our last visits with her. During this visit, we were also able to introduce her to our newest member of the family, our son, who was only about 6 weeks old. She was so proud and thrilled to meet him, and the girls were thrilled to show him off!
